Daily announcements - 2012

May 31, 2012

  • Seniors - your lockers must be emptied and all school owned instruments must be cleaned and returned by Monday, June 4th!
  • Seniors - please let me know if you're coming to the picnic on Saturday (if you haven't already done so), and let me know if you are bringing a side dish.
  • Jazz Band - Report time for the Barnes and Noble gig on Saturday is 9:30am.  Please meet in the band room.  We will load equipment and travel over to B&N together.
  • In-class "performances" will be on Thursday and Friday next week (June 7th and 8th).  This will be the second half of your final exam grade.  (The first was attendance at the Jazz Band Concert/Awards Ceremony).  These performances must be "stellar!"  Work closely with your sections over the next week to prepare.  I will be listening for musicality, dynamics, articulations, phrasing, correct notes and rhythms, and style.  These performances also give all of us a head start on next year's field show!  (What I have been hearing so far in class has been sounding pretty good, so keep working!)

  • All instrument lockers must be cleaned out before the end of the school year.  If you would like to keep the same locker next year, you may leave your lock on throughout the summer.  However, the locker must be empty and clean!  Seniors - your lockers must be emptied and all school owned instruments must be cleaned and returned by June 1st!
  • All concert music should be turned in at this point.
  • If you have not received your marching music for next year, let me know ASAP!

Good morning everyone. Because of the weather today and school's being closed, our Pre-Festival Concert scheduled for tonight has been cancelled. It will NOT be re-scheduled. However, I am making a couple of changes to the rehearsal schedule for the next week or so in order to make sure that we are ready for VBODA Concert Assessment (Festival) on March 16th.

The biggest change will be that Wind Ensemble will have rehearsal tomorrow (3/6) morning at 7:30, and Concert Band will have an added rehearsal on Thursday morning, March 15th at 7:30.

  • We are in "full swing" mode for Festival (Concert Assessment).  Our Pre-Assessment Concert is on March 5th at 7pm.  (One week from today).  The dress for that concert is "Sunday Best."

  • There is a list on the board in the band room of students who still owe fees for All-District Band.  Please take care of that, it is EXTREMELY LATE at this point.
  • Concert Band and Wind Ensemble Section Leaders - You should now be holding sectionals.  Let me know if people are not showing up.  Remember you need to give plenty of notice.  (At least 48 hours - but a week would be better!)  You should be having a sectional at least once every 2 weeks for an hour - or weekly for 30 minutes.

  • After some serious consideration and discussion with fellow band directors over the weekend, I have decided to make some changes to our festival music.  Concert Band will no longer be playing "Rise of The Firebird" and Wind Ensemble will not play "Fantasia In G."  You have all done very well on these pieces so far, I just feel that we need to play something that we will be a little more comfortable with.  I have already ordered 2 replacement pieces.  They should arrive today or tomorrow.  I think you will all like both of these tunes.  Thanks for sticking with me on this.  You guys are awesome.
  • All-State Band Candidates - the prepared etudes are now online at www.vboda.org.  Please start working on these pieces.  All of you have the potential to make this ensemble.  We will spend some time one-on-one with this if you like over the next couple of weeks.  Auditions are on February 25th at JMU.
  • A few of you still owe the District Band Fee.  I need that today!
  • Concert Band and Wind Ensemble Section Leaders - please start holding sectionals at your discretion.  Let me know if people are not showing up.  Remember you need to give plenty of notice.  (At least 48 hours - but a week would be better!)  You should be having a sectional at least once every 2 weeks for an hour - or weekly for 30 minutes.

  • Welcome Back!  I hope that you all had a very restful and wonderful holiday!
  • All-County Band is on January 12th-14th at Glen Allen High School.  Those students participating please let your teachers know that you will be missing school on Friday, January 13th.  I will send an e-mail to them as well.
  • All Winter Concert music should have been turned in by now.  If you haven't turned in your music yet, please take care of this today.  I will be checking folders for a test grade!
