  • We are missing an ENTIRE Percussion folder. This needs to be found IMMEDIATELY. The band room was pretty thoroughly searched this morning and it's not here. Today, during class there will be a folder check for EVERYONE. It will be worth a million test grades. (Actually, it will only be worth 2 test grades, but that could really hurt some of you). In your folder you should have a pencil and all of the music that we are currently working on. I hope I don't find any music that should have already been turned in.
  • Color Guard - excellent turn-out yesterday. You all worked very hard and I've got good feelings about the team. Let's keep this up for the rest of the week.

  • Thank you to everyone who participated in the pit orchestra for Once Upon A Mattress.  I appreciate all of the time and energy that you put into the show and I know that Mrs. Spears and the drama department appreciates your hard work as well.  I hope that you all had a chance to relax on Sunday.  We will get our stuff out of the auditorium today, starting 3rd period.  Also, please COMPLETELY erase any pencil markings from your books and turn them in ASAP.
  • Spring Concert Update - I am going to try to get an answer today from Mrs. Poates.  I have thought about this a lot over the weekend.  I think I'm going to push to keep our original date of May 15th.  That's what we've planned for and we have had to move the date for 3 of our last 4 concerts because of other events that were scheduled after us.  Hopefully, I'll have a definite answer by the end of the day.

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

  • Wind Ensemble - no rehearsal this week.
  • Percussionists - I'm at a loss about what to do regarding the attendance problem at our weekly MANDATORY classes/rehearsals with Matt.  It's pretty sad when the middle school students who are participating in this show up more than the students who actually go to this school and are part of this band program.  The band boosters and the school are paying Matt for his time and service.  This is costing you NOTHING.  Perhaps I need to send a bill to those people who continue to skip rehearsals week after week.  Docking your grade obviously doesn't bother you.  The only possible conclusion that I can come to is that you just don't care.  Maybe I care too much.  To those of you who are consistently here week after week, thank you, and I am sorry that your peers don't care about you or your time.  (I laugh now - because I just realized that those people who aren't showing up probably won't care enough to even check the announcements and will therefore have no idea that there is a problem.)
  • Everyone - please work individually on your concert music (and Wind Ensemble music) during your practice time at home over the next couple of weeks.  I know that a lot of you are tired - spring musical and other things going on.  Please remember that we do have one final performance this year and it needs to be a good one.  I am relying on you to do as much work on your own as we do in class and in rehearsals.  You do not have a morning rehearsal this week, you may have one next week.  Please use this "down" time to your advantage.

    • April 17-19 - "Once Upon A Mattress"

  • FESTIVAL IS 6 SCHOOL DAYS AWAY!
  • Because of the absences of certain people (again) today, I have decided that the following people will not be performing with us at festival next week and will be receiving a grade of "zero" for that performance.  If I learn later today that these people are out of school today with an excused absence, they will have one more chance.
    • Marco G. (no more chances)
    • Camesha R.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

  • FESTIVAL IS 7 SCHOOL DAYS AWAY!
  • It seems that the same people miss the percussion class (or are late to it) every week.  This is a really wonderful opportunity that is being provided to you at no cost.  It is, however, costing the band, and the boosters.  Perhaps we need to start charging those people who continue to skip this class.  Apparently, docking your grade doesn't bother you.  It should.  Some of your GPA's are going to stink.
  • The following people owe money for something (this is the most current list I have):
    • Michael B. - Concert Wear, Varsity Jacket
    • Jimmy M. - Concert Wear,
    • De'Ron P. - Concert Wear, Trip Deposit
    • Will C. - Varsity Jacket
    • Josh M. - Spring Trip
    • Camisha R. - Spring Trip

Monday, March 3, 2008

  • FESTIVAL IS 8 SCHOOL DAYS AWAY!
  • We have lots of "fine tuning" of our festival music to do over the next week and a half.  It is imperative that everyone is at each rehearsal on time and fully prepared.  We need to use our time wisely.  (This applies to wind ensemble as well).
  • There are still a few people who owe money for the spring trip (and other fees).  Please get this money in.  It is way, way, way overdue.
  • Schedule:
    • 3/4 - 7AM - Percussion Class
    • 3/5 - 7AM - Full Band

  • People who still owe money (spring trip, rebel cards, jackets, concert wear, anything...), please get that taken care of now.  The spring trip is just over a month away.  It would be really wonderful if everyone is able to go.

Thursday, February 28, 2008

  • We have lots of things to talk about during class today.
  • We have lots of work to do between now and March 13th (Festival)
  • Wind Ensemble - I'm having a hard time convincing myself that we should perform on the spring trip.  At this morning's rehearsal, there were 10 people that were either late, absent or left early.  (Yes, some of you had legitimate excuses, most of which I knew about WELL in advance).  However, we can't have a productive rehearsal when so many people continue to have conflicts week after week.  Also, the music that we have chosen (as a group) is VERY difficult.  We cannot get this music performance ready with one rehearsal a week.  It requires lots of individual practice.  The rehearsal time that we have needs to be spent working on ensemble problems, not learning notes and rhythms.  I'm not sure what to do at this point.  Spring trip is only a month away.  Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
  • Schedule:
    • 3/4 - 7AM - Percussion Class
    • 3/5 - 7AM - Full Band

Thursday, February 21, 2008

  • Good rehearsal this morning.  However, we had 19 people either absent (only 3 had legitimate excuses) or late.  This is INSANE.  Our first performance is in 4 school days!  Thank you to everyone that was here on time.
  • One other thing about rehearsals:  I don't want to see cell phones anymore.  (Or iPods, or laptops, or other distractions).  The number of people text messaging this morning during rehearsal was staggering.  Please stop.  I really don't want to do this, but if it continues, I'm going to have to start taking them away and turning them in to the office.  We don't have many rehearsals as a full band, and we need to make good use of the times that we have.

  • Wind Ensemble members:  If we have another rehearsal like we had this morning, there will be NO wind ensemble for the spring trip and possibly the spring concert.  The music that we have chosen is difficult. We can not expect to be able to perform it if you don't spend time on it at home, nor can we get it ready for performance if all of our rehearsal time is spent socializing rather than working on the music.  Please take care of this of this problem.  You are supposed to be the "top" students within the band.  Please start acting the part.
  • First performance of Festival Music is 14 days away.
  • ALL OUTSTANDING FEES MUST BE PAID BEFORE THE SPRING TRIP.
  • Schedule:
    • 2/13 - 4:00pm - Pit Orchestra
